Here are some things you should do if you want to make more money:
1.keep the old light grey, dark grey and brown. Too many people (myself
included) have stocks (big and small) of the old colors and will notice the
change and think its not good. I myself am definatly considering buying
less new lego and more 2nd hand stuff because of the color change.
2.stop making the software, pens, lunch boxes, clocks, watches etc. Well
not necessarily all of it but just some
3.stop jumping on the bandwagon with "fads". For example, the Jurassic Park
III studios sets or the Spiderman sets or the Disney Baby stuff. Will Dora
the Explorer (the new licence they announced) still be popular in 18
months-2 years-2 & 1/2 years? Licences also cost more to do than a regular
theme.
4.Combined with 3, go back to longer product cycles and to products that
will survive longer on the shelf. Conversly, if things arent selling, get
rid of them as fast as possible (for example all those King Leos Castles in
K-Mart stores here in australia that arent going anywhere)
5.keep the good licences (like star wars, harry potter) going.
6.Stop using focus groups as a marketing tool and get a much wider cross
section of the community involved. How about a survey covering things like:
How old different purchasers are
How much people are spending on the brick
How much people are spending on new brick and how much on used
How much is being spend by:
AFOLs for themselves
AFOLs for kids (theirs or someone elses)
non AFOLs for themseleves (perhaps Star Wars fans buying Star Wars stuff)
non AFOL parents for kids (theirs or someone elses)
kids of AFOL parents with their own money
kids of non AFOL parents with their own money
What current themes people like and dislike
Thoughts on the recent color change
Size of the collection owned by different people
Items people would like to see from TLC in the future
etc
7.keep Mindstorms. Release a RIS 3.0 that contains:
1.the current RCX or mabie one with some small improvements (for example,
keep the same parts inside like the H8, mabie its possible to add 1 more
input and 1 more output without pushing the cost up too much, perhaps put
in a power jack again)
2.the current IR tower
3.the current software or mabie an improved version
and 4.a new selection of parts featuring more of the parts seen in the
latest technic-esque sets (like the new clear motor parts from the Inventor
line or the like)
8.release more service packs and accessory packs. For example, release a
"trackside accessories" pack that has accessories commonly found alongside
train tracks like signals, small power boxes and so on. (much like how the
roadsigns packs of old used to be but for train). Or, release "accessory"
packs for non-licenced themes. For example, a "sports accessories" pack
with soccer balls, basketballs & other small & potentially easy to loose
parts from the soccer and basketball themes. Or an Orient Expedition pack
with things like the headgear, weapons, shields, gems etc from that theme.
Or whatever.
9.More model team. I would gladly buy sets similar to those Mega Blox Pro
Builder sets if TLC did them. Right now, the closest thing to Model Team is
the NASA shuttle (which I own), the 3 Airplanes (which I dont own because I
dont like red, brown or tan) and the 3 Advanced Designer sets (which I
would buy if I could afford them and if they didnt have as many parts I
dont have a use for in them)
and 10.more sets that emphasize buildability over playability. Do sets that
are a cross between the designer of today and the BASIC 3+, 5+ & 7+ of old
and that encourage imagination. (it seems that toys that actually encourage
imagination are getting harder & harder to find these days :( )
