From what various people have said, I think that the people who were called
were the people they happened to have phone numbers handy, who happened to
be near the phone when they called. I haven't ordered that much from them
(just 10 6038s out of their first batch after they had been announced on
Lugnet for several days). What I did do was call just before they closed (I
miss out on a lot of these deals because I'm such a lazy slug that I don't
have a telephone calling card so I have to call from home). They didn't have
time to fetch the sets and box them up and give me a shipping total, so they
took my number so they could call me back the next day to complete the
transaction. And out of this latest deal, I ordered a whopping TWO sets,
sure, they were the only two copies of a single desirable set, but I'll tell
you, I've been frustrated more often by missing deals than I have been
satisfied by landing deals (I'll also say that earlier this year when there
was a run of bad vibes hear that the thought of DESTROYING my LEGO
collection crossed my mind).

Where our frustration (and I've been frustrated at missing some of the DYA
deals) should be directed at is TLC. Why can't they do something so that
older sets can somehow be made available to us? Really all they need to do
is make the more unusual parts available somehow. If I knew that they would
take orders over the course of a year for certain parts, and do a bulk run
of custom order parts (which they got enough orders for) at some slack time
in their manufacturing run, I'd love it.

Frank
who is starting to be sorry he pointed out one of the cool and responsive
ways TLC is being to us.

I look forward to Lego deepening it's relationship w/ this community...I
think it is a step in the right direction...

I have a whole host of parts that I would like larger quantities of or in
different colors...

That said regarding the rest of the messages in this thread...

I see that many people are much more passionate about this "hobby" than I
am...I look forward to reading about the Lego outlet, on-line shopping, and
FOTWs on a daily basis...I do not begrudge someoneelse's better luck or
fatter wallet.  I sincerely hope these anecdotes don't disappear...

I have taken inspiration from many of Larry P's, LFB's, and Tom's
finds/deals/bargains...I have become a more knowledgable and astute
shopper/consumer...I have already gained much more vital information tha I
cold ever lose in outlet deals...

If someone is on the preferred list for the Lego outlet, so much the better
for me....I have more of a chance of dealing w/ these individuals than w/ an
outlet store thosands of miles away (even if they do ship)...
I look at these collectors as resources (among other things = ) -kinda
similar to Lego ESCRO...If I have the right parts for trade or enough
dollars...I can get anything I want...and I have, on occasion.

I am glad that some of these much coveted sets/pieces are going to people
that will maintain them well and not cast them ito a sandbox for 4 years and
then sell it on eBay for $500... I don't care who Lego sells too, but if I
did know, that would be valuable information indeed...Isn't more of an asset
knowing A. these sets are around B. you know somone who DEFINITELY has them...?

It could be much worse...imagine KBToys negotiating a deal to get all US
distribution of on-current Lego inventory, then marking it up...it would
make eBay look like a bargain basement...venture capitalists or "beanie
people" that aren't AFOLs could do much worse to my hobby.

I get frustrated by missing out sometimes, but these experiences only aid me
in my evolutionary climb up the Darwinistic food chain ...besides...knowing
that Larry, Tom, et al. have these items is much more reassuring than some
anonymous shopper I  buying them.  It would be as if these never existed or
were never found in a warehouse in east jahunga.

I guess you can insert all the clich'ed Neitsche "what doesn't kill
you...yadda yadda" and "half-empty v. half full glass" sentiments and
sayings here...

If I really wanted these deals I would probably set up a purchasing group
among my friends and acquire similar stature from Lego, retailers, DYA
etc...pooling resources...

just to stick in a couple more comments on previous arguements...

If Lego can maitain fiscal liquidity and viability by selling to Larry...so
be it...works for me.

If I want a set badly enough-I find a way...money and outlets usually being
the last resort..

As far as internet trade taking over or allowing Lego to sell more...Radio
stations reach more people more often than the internet...I know 5-10 Lego
AFOLs who do not read Lugnet or do not own a computer at home...ironically
they all make more $ than me...Lego will have to do alot more to reach them
to announce deals...which in the long run is counter productive.

just a few random thoughts before I rest.....
