OK, which TECHNIC sets out of the following list had the old style, and
which had the newer style of connector peg, in black?

8064 Universal Set

Most likely new.  I noticed the shift around the time nine-volt technic stuff
started appering, so...

8854 Pneumatic Crane

Hmmm....  I'd guess the new ones...

8035 Universal Set

Old ones, I'm positive of it.  This was my second Technic set.  :)

There is also the following kit:

8832  Go-Kart - mini version of 8842, and in black.

Did this kit have any connector pegs in black?  Instructions don't show any,
no idea whether LEGO included any though!!

IIRC, no.  And I'd say <set:8815> is a mini version 8842 (and 8832 is not).  :)
