I would like to inventory my lego on a strickly piece by piece basis.  Has • this
group developed a standard naming convention for the pieces and is there a
(sic) complete or at least large listing available for download.

There are a lot of parts lists and references, all with slightly different
naming conventions.

It's odd timing that you guys are discussing this now.

There is an idea in its infant stages right now that I'm trying to develop with
my father and wife, both of whom are programmers.  The idea is a complete
database of every single Lego part, accessible from a website, which would have
information including the various sets a given part is located in, and also,
perhaps, parts dealers through which that given part can be purchased.

One of the things I, too, was going to approach Lugnet users about is the
possible existence, even at TLG, of a part numbering standardization.  If it
exists, I wanted to make sure it got implemented, and if my site grew in
popularity, encourage parts vendors to adopt the standard as well.  A
vocabulary standard seems snugly in place, but I have to make equally sure that
I know the difference between a brick and a beam when designing the database!
:-)  (Don't worry, I do!)

Anyway, once the standard is established, it would be a simple thing to
encourange users like all of you to provide simple inventory counts (I'll
probably need at least two counts from different sources to ensure accuracy),
even off Kevin's Loch server scans, in a simple list format which could be
copied and pasted into my database for reference.  This would truly be a team
effort on behalf of all interested users, with a potential for Lugnet links in
Pause search, if Mr. Lehman was so inclined!  :-)

My approach, so far, was brainstormed as follows:

A seven-digit alpha-numeric number, with the digits each symbolizing attributes
of each part in question.  Example: B1100Bl  is a brick (B), 1x1 (11;  if it
was an 8x16 this number would be 8G, G equalling 16, and anything larger than
36x36 {ZZ} would be considered a baseplate and would be in its own category),
with no modifications or imprinting (00, which can go from 00-ZZ, allowing for
1296 mods for EACH size brick), and finally Bl (Blue).  This struck me as the
simplest approach, and easy-to-remember as well for the more basic parts.

From this system, should there be any doubt what part P4600Bk is?  :-)

Let me know...I'd really love a flurry of responses on this from you, the
potential users of an invaluable resource!

I just came in and saw this discussion, and that idea is fairly good, however, for the LEGO fanatic who doesn't have a clue what a part number is, it's totally useless to them. You need to remember that anyone on the planet (aliens I don't know (...) (24 years ago, 2-May-00, to lugnet.db.inv)
