Tommy, Todd, Tim and everyone else:

I’ve snipped off the stuff from the beginning--it makes for too long a read. Apologies to all in advance.

I agree with you all. It’s tough to maintain a set color palette forever, and the UV shift over time can be hideous in most cases. (The most recent antithesis of this, however, was at the Classic Space Fly-In at BrickFest 2007. Matt Chiles had some baseplates that looked more like the surface of the moon then the newer plates did...!)

As I’ve said before, LEGO is LEGO. Colors will change over time, and all I do is look at it and go..“Oh. New color.” and move on with whatever I’m building. I agree--the benefits will ultimately work out in the long run. (I also like the idea of a AFOL palette, BTW...)

At one point, I did all my own leatherwork. The difference in dye batches can vary slightly, as (obviously) does the leather itself. Even from the same company, there are subtle differences in the same dye lot, depending on any number of factors--I once bought two of the same color dyes, same batch, from two different stores (one store only had one bottle). There was a difference from just how it was stored at the point of purchase. While it was frustrating at first, the finished product looked better as a result of the mix.

My point? Nothing is forever...except maybe Twinkies©. That includes LEGO’s color palette, and I like the idea that subtle shades make for better modeling. It adds a bit more realism, and isn’t that what we strive for?

Play Well and Prosper,

Matthew

(...) There are very few things in life that I can consider myself as an expert, but the one thing is color matching and quality control of color in a manufacturing process and at the point of purchase. For 30 years I worked in a small paint (...) (18 years ago, 10-Apr-07, to lugnet.color)
