Heh, you can call it that if you’d like :)

I think the only reason that “bley” caught on is because it seems like it’s the most commonly disliked color of the new colors (IE the one that hurt people the most to see it change). Plus, the word “bley” is so reminiscant of “bleah” or “blech” or whatever other retching sounds you want to conjure up, thereby furthering the sentiment of distaste for the newer colors.

To be honest, this is the first I’ve ever heard of someone coming up with a new name for the reddish-brown color that replaced brown. I think in general people focus so much on the grey change that everything else is sort of encompassed by “bley”.

I haven’t seen anyone else mention it in this thread, but gray, dark gray, and brown weren’t the only colors to change in 2004. Purple, for instance changed in 2004 (Peeron name “Purple”) to a lighter shade (“BtPurple”). There might be more as well, but I think they were (like purple) far less common colors.

(...) I think it caught on because it sounds like a real word. There aren't any new colors in the world, nobody gets to name new colors- except us! And we did, and whatever one may think about the color itself, the word is quite nice. Tim Smith (18 years ago, 13-Feb-07, to lugnet.color, FTX)

(...) Okay--thanks, everyone! It never occurred to me that a change in color palette might be construed as a bad thing; I simply looked at the newer stuff and went, "Oh--a new color." I also thought the newer, lighter blue (which I do like) had (...) (18 years ago, 12-Feb-07, to lugnet.color, FTX)
