I wasn't planning on doing this as a .dat file, no. I'm not great at
visualizing 2D-->3D, and my CAD attempts to date have mostly been lame. I
was planning on this being a "real" project.
Some more guidelines that I've been turning around in my head...
Each person has creative control over their "generation" of the castle, but
I have a veto. This is mostly so that someone doesn't come along and say
"There's an earthquake, and the castle falls down. This gets built from the
ruins" Also for keeping people's ambitions down. I'm aiming for a certain
amount of realism, and having a keep turn into a palace in 1 generation
would take away from that.
I'd probably do most of the building, unless someone out there wants to
duplicate the project (which would be cool!). I'd envision a building
session being a long exchange between me and the current designer, where
they suggest what they want, I build it, get feedback, adjust it as
necessary, etc. (2) Repeating this until they're happy with the result, and
then posting the new generation of the castle publicly.
I'd want to keep the story arc somewhat sparse(2) - after all, we're
covering a huge timeline over the entire project - how much info can *you*
gather about your great-great-grandfather, and what he did to the house? ;)
I'd suggest somewhere between a paragraph and a page of info about the
current generation of Sir Davin's line, preferably focused on why (and what)
the changes to the castle were.
Try to respect each other's changes. That doesn't mean you can't knock
doors into walls, or add extra floors - but don't just reverse or cover over
what someone else has done - at least not right way. If you want to cover
over a courtyard and turn it into a ballroom - Cool! Just don't do it right
after the courtyard got built.

Hey, that's another cool idea. I'd be up for that, too. (But someone else
can get that ball rolling) :]
I just think that there's so *many* castle builders out there, with such a
broad range of skills and areas of expertise, that it seems like a shame to
not try and get together on something. The TCS window display that NELUG
did was *stunning*, and it only pulled on a fraction of the talent that
floats around here on Lugnet.
To put it another way, I want to raise the bar. And I want to do it in a
way that lets *everyone* play.

Ambitions R Us ;)
1: A certain amount of that would be necessary anyway. I'm fairly certain
I've got one of the bigger castle-oriented collections out there (only 4 or
5 names pop into mind immediately that I think are bigger in the strictly
castle department), but the bucket ain't bottomless. If your idea calls for
a couple hundred 2x2x3 corner bricks, well, it isn't going to happen. :)
2: But not *too* sparse - right, Shiri? ;)

| Well, I hate to see a great idea met with (almost complete) silence. So I just want to add my bit in here... I think this is a great idea! I'm kind of new to using the various CAD software, but I'd love to take a try at this. :-) Hmmm. Reading the (...) (24 years ago, 2-Nov-00, to lugnet.castle.org.cw)
