I've been building to the Base8 standard (actually since before the
standard, the Brickfest 2002 castle town standard is compatible with Base8).
Since I ended up not going to NWBrickCon, I set up a display in my garage:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=345813
Almost everything is to Base8 standards, with a few places around the
waterfall/bridge that aren't.
I have set up my roads so I have a lot of 8x16 road segments which make it
easy to lay out roads to match up.
As to using this standard in other themes, I think it could be useful for
setting up rural areas for a train display.
The advantage this system has is that with a lot of smaller "filler"
modules, it's easy to incorporate someone's contribution that might just be
16x16 or 16x32 into a nice display, yet still allow larger creations also
(my display basically has 3 large creations, the mountain/waterfall/bridge
area, the black castle, and the wharf scene, and then the rest is 8x16,
16x16, 16x24, 16x32, and 32x32 modules.

| (...) The idea of the Base8 layout has merit.. although I can see where there would be some breakdown. (8 studs to road..8 studs road, then 16 studs to end.. wouldn't match if you lined it up with a 16 studs to road, 8 studs road, then 8 studs to (...) (16 years ago, 13-Oct-08, to lugnet.castle, FTX)
