I finally got a chance to see the Viking boxes up close and personal at the
local Toys 'R Us.  I'm both excited and disappointed at the same time.  I think
this will probably be the first time in years that I buy the whole line of
Castle toys, but after looking at the prototype pictures again, there are a
bunch of "cost cutting" let-downs.  Of course, since this is the first time in a
while I think the prices match well to the sets, I can't blame LEGO that much ;)

Have there been any comparisons online between the prototype pictures and the
final releases?  I'd be interested to look at them...

The head of the ship is a definite let-down over the original.  The "play value
added" ballistic weapon is also a downer, as is the reduction in the number of
decorations on the side of the ship.

The Viking Fortress I'm mixed on.  Some of the things that had me most excited
(the beards, the DIFFERENT helmets, and nifty hammer) have been lost (beards) or
replaced (hammer) with the cheesy Knights Kingdom swords (I much dislike those
swords)...  Also, the nice Norse architecture of the rear tower has been lost to
the horrible corporate "let's add some play value" (at least that is my best
guess at that change) battle platform.
I AM happy at some of the other changes - getting rid of most of the Bionicle
decorations on the outside of the fortress for one.  And my initial reaction is
that the Dragon is so much cooler than the giant, even if the Vikings DO need
some giants to battle...  But PLEASE tell me why it is necessary to add those
horrible one piece catapults?

Any other thoughts, comments, reviews I've missed?
Whatever the case, hopefully I'll get my hands on some of them soon :)

-plucky
