For the most part, I have to agree with you. This should not be a place to
ridicule others. However, I don't think that the people responding to your post
were necessarily trying to ridicule you so much as trying to help you on how to
post well.
As for replying through email-- there are two good reasons to post publically
to LUGNET as opposed to through email. First, it more easily protects against
mass mailings. In other words, if I see that someone has already responded to
you, I won't need to. Otherwise, you might get 50 messages telling you the same
thing, and I don't think most people would want a whole bunch of messages
being written to them. The other reason that it's better to post is that it may
serve as an example for others. If someone else comes across your message, and
they are in a similar situation, they will know how to handle their own
situation better, and they are less likely to make the same mistakes.

Thank you for taking off caps lock. Generally, the more grammatically correct
and polite you are, the better a response you will get. I am glad you took the
more mature approach and didn't go trying to start another flame war by
ridiculing those you felt were ridiculing you-- that's the last thing everybody
wants :)
