Since the voting seems to have peaked out, I thought I'd finish up with a
current tally.
The Winner!
Set Rating
6074 2.97 I can only suppose awareness was raised by the recent Legend
voting - it did not do so well in past polls wherein you would usually see
the next three down this list in front of 6074. It's nice to see a well
designed mid-size set get recognition and come out the clear winner.
The Classics
6080 3.70 This and the next two sets have been swapping positions the
entire time of the poll. It really is the quintessential Castle, but it
doesn't have those desirable specialized pieces that some of the other have.
Honestly, I expected this or 6086 to be the winner.
6086 3.76 Base plates - some people love 'em, some hate 'em. But great
parts and a good minifig set and the asymmetrical design keep it in the
tight 2-4 position in the poll.
6085 4.06 This is kind of a black version of 6080. I thought it might do
worse because it wasn't quite distinctive enough, but that didn't seem to
hold it back at all.
Mid-Pack
6081 5.88 A logical step for a mid-size set: make it seem more impressive
by adding a raised baseplate. And it's not a bad set, it would just seem to
not be as versatile or as solid a design as any of the preceeding as
evidenced by the wide gap between it and the top four.
6073 5.90 A virtual dead heat with 6081. A scaled down 6080. A solid
design, it was simply rendered obsolete by the improved version (6074).
6075 6.46 One has to pause and wonder whether this should be a Legend when
there are so many other Castles that people prefer. Just too yellow? Now,
if Lego just put the minifigs from this set (unmodernized) up as a Legends
Minifig Pack they'd probably have a winner.
6090 6.52 The biggest castle. A couple of people wrote to me wondering
why it was lagging in the voting. My own opinion is that while big and
impressive, it was the beginning of the play-value-over-appearance castles
that were open and easier to get hands into and see what was going on, but
not particularly like a real castle. In a poll limited to kids, it might do
better. I'm fairly certain if this had been a poll where you rated the
castle on a scale of 1-10 rather than ranking them in order, you'd see a
smaller gap between it and the preceeding castles.
Is it really Castle?
6093 7.70 Non-European, so out of step with all the other castles. It has
an interesting sloped wall piece that has proved very popular. Pretty much
were I figured it would be, the ranking isn't too bad considering that the
Japanese theme limited its appeal to Castle collectors. Us Kurosawa fans
are appreciative that Lego did a Japanese castle, however. :-)
The Stinkers
6097 9.12 "Not a bad parts bin," is the usual method of damning this with
faint praise. Hey, if you got a couple of these on sale, at least you had
something to work with even if the basic model was poor. Which leads to...
6091 9.94 I suppose faint praise is better than none. When this stinker
came out, I was so disappointed that I went out and bought a 6086 and a 6074
for my son for about $20 more than the list price for this.

| (...) This set is brilliant. (...) It's the minis. (...) This set -- oooooooh, baby! (...) Yes, an unmodernized minifig pack. That's all castle-heads really want here. (...) I think I managed something like 12-16 of these at approx $25-30 each. If (...) (22 years ago, 23-Aug-02, to lugnet.castle)
