Personally, I think it's intended to be used in schools-- and probably for
younger grades (K-4, roughly...) And so Dacta wanted to use large pieces that
are tougher to break and harder to loose. And I'd note that this set is
comprised of mainly large bricks, not scores of small 1x1's and 2x1's etc. like
other castle sets... Hence, if they wanted to include towers, the easiest
pieces to use to make a tower were the 1/2 octagon pieces, rather than 2
separate corner walls. On that note, the 1/2 tower tops work really well
also... No clue why they used the 3 lobed piece though... There's also that 3
arched red 'fence'-ish piece too... no clue on that either...
