I know that color 334 is recommended, but I don't use LGEO, and when I process a
model through L3P color 334 comes out as sort of a dark orange and decidedly not
gold.

Is there a "cheat" color similar to the way 383 magical turns to "silver"
chrome?

You may try 494 (256 + 16 * 14 + 14) Electrical contacts (yellow).
Otherwise first use 334 and note the RGB values in the POV file.
Then use 383 and manually change the RGB values to those of 334.

The coming L3P supports the ldconfig.ldr file and then 334 should be chrome-like.
