Have a look at www.ldraw.org there is an faq for ldraw and it's dat file
format

If you find a statement like '0 FILE something' in the .xxx file it's an mpd
otherwise not.

There was some information on that somewhere on this news server! Don't know
where yet!

If there are no steps in the model beeing viewed you'll see it completed
only.
