If I'm not mistaken, LeoCAD uses a different parts format than LDraw.
Why does it do this?  Why not use the native LDraw parts library?
(Excuse my ignorance if that applies.)

Because LeoCAD is (or should be) able to render pictures in realtime,
so it uses some optimizations that would be too slow to do with standard
LDraw files.

It also stores some more information, like the position of the studs
and the places where a stud can be connected (I don't know a good name
for that). So if you have for example 2 1x1 bricks above each other, the
stud for the one that's below is not drawn and you get a small speed
increase.

Is it possible to convert LDraw part files to a format understood by
LeoCAD?

Yes, there's a program to do that. LeoCAD used to have a command to do
that on older versions but I removed it and now after so many requests
it's going to be included again.

I couldn't find any information at all about the LeoCAD part format on
the homepage.  Did I miss it?

It's available on the CVS only but I'm attaching the file to this
message.

(...) Ok, something like that would be useful to have, I think. I would feel claustrophibic if I couldn't convert new parts into the LeoCAD format. How about the other way around? Can ordinary DAT files be extracted from the LeoCAD format? And can (...) (25 years ago, 27-Nov-99, to lugnet.cad.leocad)
