Yay! I still remember how to build. I just used LDD to design some small train
sets...

Some details:
The crossing set isn't perfect - the slopes don't connect to anything unless you
place the whole set onto a baseplate (or you could glue them I guess). LDD
doesn't currently have the element that comes with TLG crossing sets to prevent
this flaw. But I've been living for years with a lack of crossings because it's
too expensive to buy the TLG sets with all the extra parts when all I want is a
crossing over the tracks and maybe a couple of stop signs. The pieces for this
version can be obtained for under $10 ea.
The stock (livestock) car is a basic box car with spaces between brown tiles
(i.e. "wood boards"). I believe that modern stock cars don't have this design,
but it's a classic look. I included a couple of cows (based on another AFOL's
design - I don't recall who, as it is in my other computer, but could provide
that info if desired).
The flatbed car for semi trailors came out okay. I like the color choices I
made, and the function seems to be there. I don't much care for the truck cab,
but as an LDD novice, I discovered something about my own building habits here:
I've always designed vehicle "cockpits" with a seated mini-figure to make sure I
had the right fit. Part of my problem on this model was that I didn't have a
seated mini-figure to work with. Also, if I order this from Lego Factory, I
will probably swap the direction of the mounting 1x1 on the flat car so that
both semi trailors face the same way when in transit.
The tanker cars were inspired by a photo of a Union Tank Car Company car as seen
on Wikipedia. (And that search was inspired by a news article on a recent train
derailment in my area wherein tank cars uncuppled. It dawned on me that all the
tank cars in my area of the world are long and black like this, which is opposed
to the TLG sets.) v2 of my model has shorter sides to make it appear longer,
but otherwise it's the same as the other tank car.
So there you have it. A handful of small models from a guy in a dark age, who
doesn't have access to many real bricks, is new with LDD, and hasn't built a
train-related MOC in 15 years.

| (...) If the situation in NA is anything like in the UK, black tankers carry heavy oils and bitumen etc. while lighter oils (petrol/gas) and other products are carried in coloured tankers. Its for a simple practical reason, spillages of heavy oils (...) (18 years ago, 26-Oct-06, to lugnet.trains)
