Just so I don't lose it, here's a link to someone who apparently has
had some success with this technique building OSMesa without X on an
ipaq. The --without-x looks like a handy build option.

Meanwhile I've put it on my todo list to put together a makefile and
instructions for building an OSMesa only version of ldglite for headless
servers. At my current development rate that should be done real soon
now in just a few short years.
