As far as I know, they should be compatible with Ldraw, which means compatible
with DOS or more preciselly filenames must have a name like "8.3" ie, 8
characters for name, and 3 for the extension. Besides this, you can also use
regular DOS paths prepended to the filename.
ex:
project\hello\..\extra\filename.dat

It should be or else it would be incoeerent, since inside MPDs reside dumps of
DAT files, which when extracted should be compatible with Ldraw.

Backwards compatibility, is a great feature, but it also is (most of the time)
a limiting factor for improvements (in this case supporting long filenames).
