I'm using WinGrep (http://www.wingrep.com/) and/or Copernic Desktop Search
(http://www.copernic.com/en/products/desktop-search/index.html) for local
searching, and have turned off all Windows indexing. Copernic is awfully
fast (but it creates huge indexes), while WinGrep is better (IMO) for source
code searches. The only drawback in the free version of Copernic is that it
only indexes my computer, not the local network, but I can live with that...
