Here's a resurrection of an OLD thread... :-)

I've recently begun to store all my TECHNIC sets, which range from about 1988 to
present, all have been stored MISB (well, OK, they've been stored in the
original box after I opened, inventoried by bag, and then stored them BACK in
ziplocks that corresponded to original bags -- oftentimes after building the
main model, but always without mixing with other sets).

That sounded terribly anal-retentive.  Well, I used to live in an apartment
during most of my post-dark-ages years, and so sets were more stored than built
for a long time... there was a REASON my inventories were once targetted to
possibly become part of LUGNET.  But I digress...

In wanting to label drawers correctly, I've gone back and done some research on
certain parts that were "remolded" over time.  One of those was the 3650
24-tooth crown gear.  My findings are as follows...

There were 4 variations that I've seen.

1977 brought us something very close to the '77 version referenced as 3650a
here:
http://isodomos.com/technica/registry/gear/gear_4.php

The difference was that the center line portion extended further out, to the
point where it would touch the circumference of the circle formed by the inner
curved design (on the photo, extend the center line of missing plastic out left
and right until it touches the "dot" to the left, that's how far out the initial
gear design extended).

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th would be a, b, and c designs as shown on that page.

Note that 3650a was introduced in 1990, not 1994 as shown on that page. All my
sets from that year (8094, 8064, 8850) have the "new" reinforced crown gear.

I need to do more research to determine when the "long tooth" version was
released, exactly.

Is anyone opposed to my moving 3650a.dat to 3650.dat?  If someone later
makes a file for one of the other versions of this part, we can do
another move at that time.

Hmm, interesting.  Thanks for digging into this, Clark.

It's hard to judge from the Technica pictures, but I'm guessing that for
LDraw, we probably won't want separate files for 3650 and 3650a (if we
did want separate files, we'd call them 3650a and 3650b).  But 3650b
might be enough of a change to warrant a new file.  Sometime.

Steve,
There are several variations of this gear: the height of the teeth and extra
support.

Technica lists the variations:
http://w3.one.net/~hughesj/technica/registry/gear/gear_4.php

Here's and early Lugnet post that mentions the variation:
http://news.lugnet.com/db/inv/?n=124
"3650
Name: 24t crown gear
Name: 24t crown gear II
Note: I consider both versions to be the same part because it doesn't make any
difference for building."

Here's one that matches Lego 3650 to LDraw 3650a:

Hope that helps,
Clark

Does anyone remember with certainty why part file 3650a.dat was released
with the 'a' suffix?

The part came out in update 98-10, and hasn't been touched since.  There's
no 3650.dat or 3650b.dat, as far as I can tell.
