Here is the current version of my parts list file. I'm posting this here
because it helps explain the part numbers in my inventories. I'm also posting
part of it to lugnet.db.bricktionary because it might give people some useful
ideas.

This is my part number database. It only lists parts that appear in
inventories that I have created, or inventories created by others
which I have double-checked and verified. In all cases I own the set
and thus the parts. I am not interested in creating a comprehensive
list of parts; this list is just to make it easier for other people to
understand my inventories.

There are three types of part numbers; each part can have more than
one number, but only one of each type:

  1. LEGO mold part numbers, found right on the part itself.

  2. LDraw numbers (LDraw is a 3-D CAD program just for LEGO written
by James Jessiman, see <http://home.att.net/~partsref/index.html> for
a fairly complete list of its part numbers)

  3. My numbers (I create these only when #1 and #2 are not available)

When more than one number is available, I use the one that appears
highest on this list. The other number(s) are also given to allow
cross-referencing.

The reason I have so many "mrXXXX" part numbers is that I want my
inventories to have a part number for every item listed. The LDraw
list is incomplete and parts don't always have numbers molded into
them, so I make up numbers. Often I get an LDraw number later, then I
just add that number to this list to create a cross-reference.

This list and my inventories are in a category-based order. This order
started with the technica registry, then I added non-Technic parts at
the beginning and other Technic parts where it seemed appropriate. An
overview of my ordering is as follows:

  rectangular bricks
non-rectangular bricks, flat on top and bottom
non-rectangular bricks, flat only on bottom (including roof bricks)
non-rectangular bricks, flat only on top (including inverted roof bricks)
  rectangular plates
  non-rectangular plates
  tiles
other non-Technic elements (which usually means anything that
appears in a non-Technic set and is not in the technica registry)
listed by category in alphabetical order, as on home.att.net/~partsref
Technic elements listed in Jim Hughes' technica registry
<http://w3.one.net/~hughesj/technica/index/t_index.html>, and in
registry order
(Technic elements not in the technica registry are inserted where
they seem to "belong")

Note on patents: US patents are a matter of public record and I have
provided some numbers here because seeing the drawings might be of
interest to some LUGNET members. The patents can be viewed at
<www.patents.ibm.com>. The lack of a patent number does not mean that
a part is not protected. LEGO files for patents on all their parts,
and the design is protected from the date the application is filed.

I don't count motors, minifigs and other pieces with moving parts as
more than one piece the way LDraw does. That's because I'm only
interested in inventorying, and in describing how to build models. If
it's one piece for the purposes of building a model, it's one piece
for the purposes of this list. In rare cases I will list multiple
LDraw numbers seperated by '+' signs, like "ld2855+ld2856" for the
large turntable.

Most parts have multiple names. I list whatever names I have had
occasion to use. If a name comes from LEGO(r) literature I call it an
"Official-Name".
