I'd like to propose the creation of a new meta-command. It is as follows:
0 !STANDALONE_LDR
The zero at the beginning of this command MUST be the first byte of the model
file. LDraw viewing programs can look for the presence of this command at the
beginning of an LDraw file, and allow the file to be loaded without a valid
LDraw directory set up in the viewer. This will allow self-contained LDraw
files to be viewed without requiring the (multiple megabyte) LDraw library to be
downloaded and installed.

I can add support for this meta-command to LDView quite easily. It won't help
Sven above, since LDView doesn't support steps, but I would think it would be
fairly easy to modify other existing viewers to support this command as well.
As it turns out, I could also easily add a command to LDView to save a loaded
model into such a standalone file. The only concern I have is that publicly
posting such files would violate the old LDraw library license agreement, and
adding such a command to LDView might encourage people to do this.
As far as I can tell, it doesn't in any way violate the new contributor
agreement, but there's currently no way to tell by looking at a part file if it
uses the new agreement. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? On a
related topic, will all the new files have some indication in a meta-command
that they use the new agreement? That would make it easy for me to have LDView
auto-detect whether a part used the old agreement or the new one.

| (...) This is a bit of a problem for me too. I've written scripts to import and export ldraw data from Blender, and naturally I built a model in Blender following that.. but now I'm not allowed to share the original Blender model without removing (...) (19 years ago, 9-Jan-06, to lugnet.cad.dev)
