A shortcut is a file that provides an alias, a second number, for a part. Some
shortcuts also specify the particular color (or colors) to use in a part.
One classic example of a shortcut is part 30065.dat (even though its LDRAW_ORG
line doesn't show 'Shortcut').
Another set of examples are the Pirates ship hulls: 2557c01.dat is the regular part file.[1] 4100338.dat and 4100340.dat are both shortcut files, providing the parts library the known TLC numbers for specific color combinations.

1) 2557c01 is a composite part file (ie, a part made up of one or more other
part files). Unfortunately, I just noticed that it is (incorrectly) identified
as a shortcut -- it is not a shortcut. :/
