Yeah, before they updated their website it was easy to find all this stuff.
I admit their website is better now, but some of the old content is now
obscure or, I suspect, nonexistent.
Well, there's only two things you need to worry about when rendering images
for SC3K: 1) the image has to have the correct width and height, and 2) the
image needs to be rendered in orthographic perspective.  The default
viewpoint that l3p renders at is sufficient.  Simply change the longitude by
90 degrees from the l3p default every time you want to render an image from
a new direction (i.e. northwest, northeast, southeast, southwest).  Once
you've created these four images, load them up in SC3K_URK and save them as
a building file.  You'll have to mess with POVray's file output size in the
ini settings or adjust the camera distance in order to get the right image
dimensions.  If you want my advice, 1 baseplatewidth in ldraw should equal
one tilewidth in SimCity.  I came to this conclusion by comparing the school
bus and pedestrian size to minifigs and ldraw vehicles.  The scale seemed to
match pretty well.  Also, you'll find that when you render an image in
povray, the baseplate will have a height equal to one tile.  You don't want
this, so erase any indication of baseplate height from the rendered bitmap
in your favorite image editing utility.  This insures that all your
buildings will line up correctly, without looking out of place.
To render the pov image in orthographic perspective, simply scroll down
somewhere near the camera and light_source objects and uncomment the keyword
"orthographic" (erase the // before "//orthographic").
I believe there are some template images included with the SC3K_URK
download.  You have to make sure to crop and resize your bitmaps to meet
these constraints/requirements.  Other than that, there's nothing really
difficult about creating images for SC3K if you're using SC3K_URK.
There used to be a bit more detailed tutorial on creating renderings for
import into SC3K on the SimCity website.  But, since their website overhaul
I have been unable to find this information.  It dealt with setting the
correct angles for lighting, light source intensity, and some other stuff I
can't remember.  Don't worry about that, though.  L3p's default settings
look just fine.

That's about it.  Good luck!

Mike

There's no tutorial, yet.  I may make one in the future if demand increases.
If you're using SC3_URK, the process is pretty self-explanatory.  Very easy.
If you're using Building Architecht Tool or Building Architect Plus, the
process is a little more gruesome.  The images you'll see at the above site
were made using B.A.P., so I do know how to do it.

Dude, this rocks!  Okay, now how do I do it?  ;]  I own SC3KU.  I
didn't know what SC3URK was but after roaming the SimCity web site
for 15 minutes I managed to find it (talk about obscure!).  It
seems it's separate from BAP.  Now I've never used BAP, but I
am comfortable with the MLCAD/L3P/POV-Ray trio.  So how do I
go about getting from the LEGO world into the SC3KU world?
From what I was able to find at SimCity, it seems it's via .BMPs.
Any guidelines for view angles, scale, etc?

Looks like this will be this fall's procrastination toy!  ;]

Thanx,
KDJ

(...) G'day Mike, Yeah, I finally started using their Site Map yesterday to find things. Originally I was worried it was for the entire EA world, but it's just for the SimCity site. It's about the best way to get around there now IMHO. Using it I (...) (23 years ago, 2-Sep-01, to lugnet.cad.dat.models)
