There are currently many free programs that generate GIF output, like
Gimp. But this is potentially dangerous, since the GIF algorithm is
patented. For more information, look at:

Anyway, I understand that the planned UNIX/Linux version of LDLITE will
output the image in PPM format, which can be converted to GIF by another
program, like, say "ppmtogif".
