if you want to do it using only L3P then the best starting place is the text
file that accompanies L3P (L3P.txt, i believe)... or visit the L3P web site for
some background..
i also wrote a small front-end program for L3P to make the command-line entries
a little more user-friendly... once you take a look at the L3P docs and the L3P
page you might also take a look at my add-on

for a simple, no frills conversion it's just "L3P <datfilename> <povfilename>"
