OK, here's the question then.

it relates to MPDs and MLCad.

first, should I be able to read and manipulate an existing MPD in MLCad?
For instance this one:

Yes, you should be able to read this file in MLCAD.

Saving the body of that posting as a .MPD file gives me a bunch of "part not
found" and then a GPF. MLCad seems to work fine on some other files I have. • But
those are perfectly ordinary parts I think, and I am not more than a month or
two behind on updates...

It is not a problem with out of date parts files.  Actually, yours are
probably more up to date that the ones in this file.  I noticed that the
majority of the "part not found" errors are where it uses older DAT files,
such as the old 1x1 round brick, which has been replaced by two files, one
with a solid stud in the top and one with a hollow stud.

You got a GPF?!?!  I got an invalid page fault (or whatever it is called) that
shuts down the program, but a GPF, if I am not mistaken, brings windows down.

The fault I got from a cut and paste of the data of the posting comes from a
line wrap that must be removed manually.  Open the file with Notepad and
scroll down until you near the bottom of the file, where you will come across
this:

0 FILE flowers.dat
0 Komplette Blumen mit 3 Blueten
0 Author: Joachim Probst (jprobst@shadow-corner.ows.es)
0 Status: Un-Official Element

Make sure that the 3742.DAT does not word wrap like it does above and instead
looks like this:

0 FILE flowers.dat
0 Komplette Blumen mit 3 Blueten
0 Author: Joachim Probst (jprobst@shadow-corner.ows.es)

That will end the problems that MLCAD has loading this file.

Second, suppose I have created a model file that I want to use as a submodel
(say, a truck assembly). If I start a new file, do an "import" I don't see the
submodel in the main model. Do I add it just like I add any other part? I want
two instances of it, rotated 180 degrees so the couplers face outward.

It will be in the parts list under DOCUMENT.  Expand that part of the tree and
you should see all submodels (as well as the main model) of the MPD you are
working on.  Use it just like you would use any other part.  Perhaps this is
where LEGO got the idea for using POOPs.  :-)

Can someone walk me through that part? I'm a little confused by the process.

Thanks to Mike Poindexter for turning me on to MLCad, it's way easier to get
started in than LDraw/LEdit (even with Bram's good tutorial I found LEdit very
counter intuitive)... MLCad you just drag the part over from the window and
voila. I also like that you have the text view where you can reorder the parts
or add steps etc.

I am glad you like the program.  I, too, was puzzled by LDraw's interface and
found MLCAD so incredibly easy.

Thanks for any helps. I've read the help text in this area a few times and I
don't quite grok it.

Grok it?  Like "I grok Speck?"

Hope this helps.

Mike Poindexter

PS:  Anybody want to walk me through POV-RAY?
