If MeshLab suppors 3DS files, you might try using LDView to convert the file to
3DS format.  Load the file in LDView, then select File->Export, then select
"3DS: 3D-Studio File" in the "Save as type" pop-up. • It does work rather well (MeshLab does support 3DS)...
Unfortunately, LDView's 3DS
exporter still has some problems, so the result might not be any better.
Indeed, it seems that invertnext statement is ignored. On the minifig, only
front and inside of hands are shown backwards in MeshLab (other inverted areas
such as cap inside are hidden)

I tried also stl export, no color here (not supported by the format I guess?),
and strange problems in the elbow. The eyes and mouth seem missing too.
