Yeah, thats a workable strategy. Its what I did here:

I assume LPub makes it easier for the user by coming up with the scaled
colors automatically.

Sure, you will be able to. I used a modified version of PreL3P, my little tool
for replacing color codes. Ill post version 1.3 which will include this
ability (loading different configurations partway through a model) soon, once
I take care of any other bugs that come up. Ill post more details on the
technique at that time, too.

Until then, heres another little example.
The current step is drawn with
these colors (the defaults) and previous steps are drawn with
these colors.
