Dear all,
A few people have made queries about what is going to happen to LDraw with the
advent of Lego Digital Designer (LDD). The SteerCo have prepared the statement
at http://www.ldraw.org/article/393 address these concerns which I have included
below:
"The development of LDD and Lego Factory have produced an alternate brick CAD
system to the LDraw system. It is the position of the LDraw Organisation that
development of the LDraw system will continue alongside and as much as possible
work with LDD and that LDD should not be considered a replacement for the LDraw
system (including editors such as MLCad and LeoCAD, the parts library and other
associated software).
There are many reasons for the continuation of the LDraw system. These include a
wider variety of parts than LDD offers, more sophisticated editors, a public
domain format, and a wide range of associated software. As such the continuation
of the LDraw system remains the highest priority for the LDraw Organisation in
order to provide users with the choice and tools to use the LDraw system.
Members of the Steering Committee have been in contact with members of the LDD
team to look at ways of working together and there has been encouraging progress
on this front. It is the hope of the Steering Committee that this will add to
the experiences of LDraw system users now and in the future.
In short, the LDraw system is not going away and we hope that the contributors
(parts authors and reviewers, software developers and the wider users community)
will continue to support it with the same enthusiasm as they have done in the
past.
The LDraw Steering Committee"
Please make any further queries about this in response to this post.
Yours,
Tim
On behalf of the LDraw Steering Committee
