Are GIFs or PNGs any more vulnerable to viruses than jpegs
or bitmaps?

None of these image formats should (!) be susceptible to viruses, since
they don't contain any executable code.

However (!), there are some viewer programs out there that contain bugs,
that could possibly be exploited by a specially designed image. But that's
the fault of the viewer, not the image format.
