Don, thanks for including the .cad group; I don't keep up w/ the .mlcad
group.

I agree that there's just not a lot of publicity for the Linux flavor
of tools. I've been using the LDraw tools since late 1999. I didn't
realize the benefit of LDView and start using it till 2001, but I've
been hooked ever since. I have been using an older version of LDView on
an old machine and didn't even know there was Linux port. This is good
timing for me as I'm trying to migrate my LDraw building to a Linux
box. I'm still a newbie when it comes to compiling under Linux, but w/
my CS background, I don't expect it to take too long (once I get some
time) to figure out.

<two cents>
I think there might be other Linux newbies out there who just aren't
comfortable w/ compiling apps - they prefer pre-compiled apps like they
get in Win-doze.</two cents>

Travis, PLEASE keep up the good work on LDView - I love it.

I'm not sure I agree with your assumptions about Linux users.  From
my experience, they seem to be more self sufficient and generally
tend
to ask fewer questions.  I've been too busy to play with LDView
lately, but if I did, I'd just compile it myself from the latest
sources, and I'd probably incorporate any new goodies from the
latest Windows sources if they weren't there.  That's what tkdiff is
for.  For all you know, someone could have RPMs (or whatever) on the
net with the latest LDView already built and ready to run.  I myself
have no idea how long the Debian packages for ldglite were available
before I found out about them.

Don

(...) Thinking about it, I think Don's probably right. In addition, I agree with Jack that most users aren't going to want to have to compile something themselves. I actually have a binary distrubution of the Linux version in addition to the source (...) (21 years ago, 19-Sep-03, to lugnet.cad)
