(...) Hmmm, it seems to me that any algorithm that can find the missing Type 5 lines (in order to create the dummy entries) should be able to find *all* of the Type 5 lines. (...) Actually, no. That is indeed a long-term goal, but it is hampered by two things. First of all, it's a lot of work. (...) Unfortunately it messes up unless you inlude FTX line breaks, or fixed code box characters (pipe). Unfortunately, both make it harder for people using email or newsreaders, so probably best to do it as you did, browsers can just click "View (...) (...) So do I... That's why I love Sculptris that has a wonderfully intuitive interface (but it does help to have a reasonably powerful machine). (...) reads the primitives correctly. What I meant about bad lines was that I noticed your tool does some checking for spurious lines; that must just be for lines between coplanar surfaces. (...) Very interesting! (URL) I am not so much comvinced by the improvement for flat shading. Looks like we trade triangular artefacts in one direction with artefacts in the other one. (...) I see. So what you really want to do in LDView is ignore the Type 5 lines (at least for smoothing) and smooth wherever there's no Type 2 edge lines between the triangles (and quads). (...)
