Yes, it was difficult trying to come up with a design that I liked because of
two reasons:
First, as you mentioned, he doesn't always look the same from season to season
or even scene to scene. Sometimes he is unbelievably fat, other times he is
thin. His head ranges from 1/3 the height of his body to 1/4 or 1/5. I just
had to sort of pick something and stick with it. :)
Second, and more importanly, since the Simpsons are such stylized two
dimensional characters, it was difficult to find a shape for Homer's head that
made him look "correct" from various angles. Technically, when you look at a
Simpsons charater from the side, their eye should look like a circle... that
would mean that either his eyes should be wider than his head, or that you'd
have to "burrow out" a spherical cavity for his eyes. Neither worked. I
actually built an entire Homer head trying to get that to work, and he just
looked wrong from every angle. :) So, it was really a matter of finding
something that worked most of the time.
