I have spent the last few months trying my hand at lego sculptures. I knew
I couldn't match some of the works I have seen here, but I felt I had to at
least give it a try. My only problem was the subject. Being a huge fan of
Warhammer 40k, I decided to see how easy a bolter would be.
I spent about a day in designing the look and the size of the piece, then I
set out building. It turns out, I had nowhere near enough like colored
bricks to complete it. I have slowly acquired enough, and have finally all
but finished one.

As you can see, it still needs a couple of bricks.
My next project was to be something a little more challenging. I looked at
my figures and finally came up with the idea of building a shoulder pad. I
felt this would test my new found skills without destroying my hopes of
finishing it.
Before I even began, I knew I would need more bricks, and I was soon
introduced to the wonderful world of BrickLink. For those who don't know,
it is a wonderful source for purchasing large numbers of similar bricks.
Well, as it turns out, this new project pushed my skills to the limit. My
first attempts were too large or too narrow. I wondered if Legos could
actually be used for such a piece. My fears were soon washed away as I
searched the Brickshelf archives for projects with similar lines. After
nearly a month of work 'getting it right' I had hit upon the version I have
here.

So far so good. My next task would prove to be the ultimate creation, at
least in my eyes. To create the actual helmet of a space marine. This
would require tons of curves and intricate lines. I figured if I could
complete it, then the rest of the body of a space marine would be fairly
simple, relatively speaking. After the aforementioned stop on BrickLink and
many a night spent test fitting bricks for the various areas, I hit upon a
design. As it turns out, the most difficult part about this piece, aside
from the form, was that it being hollow created stability issues. I have
never been able to see inside the sculptures I have seen here on Lugnet, so
I had to 'wing it'. After many hours spent rebuilding areas that 'exploded'
while building I finally finished it.

Now I know what your thinking. It's awfully blue, isn't it? Well, I had
hoped to put it on here before any changes were made. The same goes with
all my works. I welcome any comments and suggestions.
Oh yeah, I am currently working on a back pack. Also, in case you are
wondering, all these pieces are just about life size. Another stipulation I
had when I started out. Only the helmet, for obvious reasons, can't be 'worn'.
