Thanks! Yes they are pretty ubiquitous in Japanese shops. Some Chinese
restaurants have them too. There are actually several kinds; some are for good
luck and some are for money; the kanji on the coin the cat is holding and which
arm is raised indicates which it is for. See the links I put on the Maneki
