as long as I don't drop it or tip it forward, the pieces will remain
intact. for travel/public display I plan to lay a 1/4" piece of
plexiglas over the front.

Wow - that must have been quite maddening!  Aren't you afraid of the
parts falling out though?  Did you consider using headlight bricks or
an extra layer or something to hold the pieces together?  Or is the
friction and weight enough to prevent any problems...?
