In lugnet.reviews, Shiri Dori writes:
Every [non-Willa] female face could be used for anything.

An army of Princess Storm troops would be amazing, IMO - provided they only
had a smiley face, or a lipstick face (not that I need those, no way!) or a
different GENERIC female face (that TLC has not released yet and perhaps
never will :-\ ).

The Gail Storm face is pretty near generic: the clone factor (as id'ed by
Shiri) is still a bit of a problem, but you can use those features nearly
anywhere and they seem to fit. In my set-ups Gail is currently featuring as
Cleopatra, Shania Twain and Kuan Yin (a protege of the Buddha).

You're right, Gail Storm is great. I like her face a lot, luckily only have
two so no cloning problems yet.

However, by saying Princess Storm I meant the Castle princess Storm, as
appeared in 6071. She's truly awesome, I love her. The red-haired, stormy-eyed
face is brilliant and without it, Scar would not be what she is today.
I think her torso is cool too, as the flared helmet (can't get enough of
those!)... but to have multiples of her face? No way, I don't want that.
That'd ruin any appreciation I have to a well designed and articulated face,
(just as Leo and the Black Mustached knight could've been appreciated had they
not been so over-bearing and popping up everywhere).

I really like your characters Shiri, particularly the work you've put into
their backstories. I think that the contrast between Cleo and Scar is
quite telling as well -- one where you had to modify the face because of
the rock raiders intercom, and the other that would work in any theme. That
contrast, as well as Susan Hoover's excellent comment at
<http://www.lugnet.com/dear-lego/?n=2052> , started me thinking about
minifig faces, and bricks in general.

I think there are basically three types:

1. Generic: the smiley or a 4x2 brick
2. Specialised: most of the Star Wars heads or a 5x6 castle wall
3. Over-specialised: Willa or the rock raiders grille-canopy

Sure specialisation can be useful, like for giving characters personality,
and it can stimulate some great building ideas: it's cool to see a
specialised piece used in a completely unexpected way. But overall (and
this is where my argument deteriorates into the general whinge) I think
it's a negative trend.

My two major completed MOCs as an AFOL have been an Aztec pyramid/temple
and a pirates' outpost. The first of these was built largely from 375
(yellow castle), the second from 6080 (king's castle). 375 can become
almost anything, 6080 is only any good for medieval-renaissance buildings,
or maybe a really gothic space cruiser in a pinch.

One good thing about faces is that they are relatively easy to customise
well (producing a lego-ish result), giving a wider range of faces that are
useful in more contexts. Of course, it would be easier if TLC could just
do that for us, or at least increase the smiley count from 5% to 50%.

In short, I think that, like Vegemite, specialised pieces/heads are a good
thing, but, again like Vegemite, they are best used sparingly.

BTW, you can't see Willa's hideous cackle under a ninja mask...
Yeah, but her eyebrows are just as bad ;-)
Hey, some of my ninjas are pretty ticked off 8^)

(...) Thanks! (...) Welllll.... I'm not sure I agree. There's quite a long way to go IMO between a 1x4 arch piece and a 5x6 castle wall. There are many pieces that are not quite generic that I couldn't live without (for example the said arches, as (...) (24 years ago, 23-Apr-00, to lugnet.build.minifigs)
