I am not certain, but I think the first sets I saw with faces other than the
standard yellow smiley were the first generation of Pirate sets (1989).
These sets included the face you mention as well as the Redbeard face, the
stubble with eye-patch face, and the lady-pirate face. There were also some
others from that series, IIRC, possible some with full beards an no
eye-patch. I think the Clipper included the Admiral face with the white
sideburns that I always liked...
