Hi All,

Can anyone (Lindsay?) suggest a source for information regarding the belowdecks
layout in a German S-boat (E-boat to the Allies ...)?  Specifically I'm working
on a -62 class:

To avoid having my name taken in vain, I must answer!

   http://www.kriegsmarine.net/Sboats.htm

This has some photos that may be helpful, at least for curvature
work, but no interior shots *again*!  But never fear...

I do have a (gasp!) non-electronic reference that SHOULD have
it (in short, if it doesn't, nothing this side of the German
   naval archives will):

Harald Fock, _Fast Fighting Boats 1870-1945: Their Design,
Construction, and Use_ (Wash DC: Naval Institute Press, 1978)

(Someone on Amazon has a used copy up for $35, but check my
note below.)  It's probably your best bet, given that none
of these S-boats are still afloat AFAIK.  There's also a book
on USN and RN efforts to *counter* the E-boats that came out
around '96 but I doubt it would have much besides exterior
   photos and lotsa talkin'.

I've found one (1!) cutaway diagram showing the belowdecks of an American PT
boat, which is on the right track ... I figure there's probably some random
book out there that shows a view of it, but I haven't come across it yet in my
scouring.

Go looking for this thing.  According to a cursory search,
UMass-Amherst has a copy at the main library at location:

      V830 .F6213 +

I assume it's a folio, because of all the purty pictures.
(Translation:  Bring lotsa shiny dimes for the photocopier.)

You might have better luck with the German version (Schnellboote)
but I didn't bother digging for a ref to it.  Speaking of German
versions, there's a German volume entitled

   _Auf Verlorenem Posten:  Die 9.Torpedobootflottillen_

that happens to be in the same library, at location:

      D770 .B56 1987

But I'd bet that's an operational history that won't dwell on
the technical aspects like Fock, who I'm almost certain has
notes on interior detail and a heck of a bibliography to boot.
What good is being an anal-retentive detail dork without a book
that caters to your dorkdom?  :D

Any help would be greatly appreciated - without it, I'm going to have to get
... *gasp* ... interpretive.

We can't have that.  I'll jump on the interpretation grenade!
(Or is that interpretive dance on the interpretative grenade?)

If you can't get reader access to UMass's library (I don't know
if you're still in the university system), I can probably get
it on interlibrary loan, photocopy the relevant pages, and
serve as your conduit that way.  But I'd rather you got it,
because I'm a lazy cuss, as you can tell.  ;)

   re[v/f]erentially,

   LFB

(...) Muhahahaha, perfect! (...) Hmmm, seems I happened to log into Amazon.com and click that little button that says "add to cart". How'd that happen? Seems I don't need much of an excuse to order books. Lindsay, you're going to breka me though ... (...) (23 years ago, 8-Sep-01, to lugnet.build.military)
