This is my "next generation" adaptation of the Marine LAV. As if there
aren't enough  variants of the chassis already, I decided to give a go at
building one last year as my second model after finally getting space to
create again.

I recall seeing this before, but I don't think you had the RL photos up at the
time.  It looks great (both in RL and your versions) ... I've always loved
armored cars!  Yeah, treads are impressive and don't spin out and all that, but
look at those wheels ... I recall reading an article about the next generation
of these, and how they were going to be taking a larger role in the military.
Obviously, they can't compete in major face-offs against tanks, but in the new
world order, they are looking more and more attractive.  Conflicts are becoming
faster and more fleeting, mobility continues to develop (STEP 1: trenches to
Blitzkrieg.  STEP 2: Lumbering Tanks to darting armored cars?), and military
pricetags are coming under increasing scrutiny.  And the nature of engagements
are changing ... it's harder to get a whole slieu of tanks anywhere in the
world quickly, whereas these were light enough to be air-lifted in respectable
numbers anywhere, and then were fast enough and had a long enough range to
be a presence anywhere in x hours (x being a number I've forgotten, but
considerably less than a corresponding tank deployment).  And given a nice 90mm
main gun, it's not as if they're useless in an alley fight, either.

Great work, Joel ... hopefully its demise will serve a higher cause.

I still drool at pictures of the Sd.Kfz 221 and 222 *slurp*.  My rendition
is too large by a fair amount, but I still keep it around out of affection.
That reminds me - anybody else ever play Panzer Leader or PanzerBlitz?  The
look of uninhibited shock on the other player's face ... "what do you mean you
can go 18 hexes, 36 on roads?"  ... priceless :P

By the way, you can buy decommisioned armored cars (well, and tanks and
anything else, really) from various vendors.  I've always daydreamed about
picking up a British Ferret for a measly $20k.  Imagine driving down your
street - it's even enough to make hummers skirt out of the way, I suppose ;)

(...) <snipped> (...) I originally didn't have the RL pictures there -- that's something I credit you with, Shaun. After seeing your RL comparisons for your WWII MOC's I realized how helpful it is to be able to compare. :) (...) I remember first (...) (23 years ago, 7-Sep-01, to lugnet.build.military)
