It's relatively flexible plastic, from a document cover, which I carefully cut
into shape and which is held in place with adhesive tape. I strated doing this
years ago, and despite LEGO now producing somewhat better canopies (such as the
one on the Naboo starfighter, for instance), IMHO this still looks better.

Well, it's an idea I might consider, although the, of course, I would end up
with studs on the bottom of the aircraft. I typically don't mind to see studs on
an a model, and by combining plates with studs and tiles alongside, you can
actually suggest gradual curvature.
