I immediately built it when I saw it the first time (Which I never do by the way), and I use a more common brick for the three-way connection, but thanks for the thought.

   This page: http://www.americanrevolution.org/artillery.html has a pretty good explanation of the difference between morters, howitzers, and cannons. Basically a morter is a fixed piece that looks a bit like a really thick-skinned bowl or cup, a howitzer is a more mobile piece that can vary it’s angle, and a cannon is a big heavy gun, more along the lines of the standard LEGO pirate cannon.
