I am well and truly impressed and would love to see it in action, any chance of

Yes, the loco shell is seriously hollowed out. That does take practice. Although
I got lucky, the second, backup shell is still unmodified.

As it turns out, the track exactly snaps between plates arranged two wide.
You'll see all the straight sections have side plates. The curves are free
standing which is why I had to make the loop large enough to accommodate a
single straight half way through each end curve to help anchor it.
