Hi, I have been playing armored core 3 for a few days now and really love • the
way that you can costumize the mechas with certain parts (legs, arms, • heads,
weapons) and i notivced the recnt mechbay moonbase modules and that got me
thinking. If it would be possible to use that idea and create modular • mecha???

We could build legs and torsos and arms that are almost bare and let them • have
pre-approved connection points so you can add your own power plants, • boosters,
missle launchers, space cannons, etc.

i know i may sound rather vague and my grammar is poor, but i am on pain • killers
and can only type with one arm (broke collar bone)hehe. So fi anyone who • is
feeling rather coherent understands what i am saying would care to • elaborate or
add their own ideas, feel free!

Im currently shopping for parts for my own mecha. I decided to follow a
route something like this by using either a 1x4 with 3 holes technic brick
or 1x2 with two holes to mount to.

Then to connect I decided to either use a 1x2/2x2 brick with pin and axle
hole OR for the 1x2 a 1x2 brick modifed with 2 pins.

The idea is that they "slot into each other". At least two connection points
are used to keep the model steady and prevent unwanted rotation etc etc. If
rotation is needed then it will have to be implemented before or after the
connection point. The problem with this is it is somewhat clunky. This
leaves me to personally believe that a modular system may work for weapons
and such however it would not be suitible for limbs because of the different
mech sizes, and how some legs are suited to some mechs.

I think although it is a good idea, mechs would become structuarally weak if
they were only connected at a few points (this doesn't matter so much for
guns, but for legs a big loss in strength is a bad thing).

If you come up with something better, please let me know.

PS This system is only suitable for horizontally mounted bricks and larger
weapons

I guess we could fix that by making the legs and hips one whole "part" so that the builder of the legs can use whatever joint method they want. I think it would be a good idea to seperate parts into classifications for mecha sizes though. For (...) (21 years ago, 18-Sep-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)
