Hello everone...

Here is my new mecha - Aldebaran:

I got the idea when I started toying around with a SBD click hinge based
armature:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=45987

I figured the whole "building a frame" style of construction was a good way to
1) carefully control the overall proportions of the mecha, and 2) not spend a
whole lot of effort reinventing joint tech for every 12" mecha I build.

A little history - Aldebaran was originally a variation of the first bipedal
mecha I built.  I made both a yellow (Procyon) and red (Aldebaran) version of
this mecha in 1998, long before I discovered the joys of the build.mecha (I
don't think Lugnet was even around back then).  I kept Aldebaran around for a
while for historical purposes until 2001, but he ultimately fell victim to the
fate which falls upon most Lego creations.  It's a good thing, too - by today's
standards, this mecha was hideous, even for a first mecha!

Anyway, to really focus on proportions for this project, I decided not to give
it a pilot; so I figured I should make this a reincarnated version of Aldebaran.

There were more things I was going to do to this mecha, like give it some big
guns (sorry Mladen), a backpack (I say that for every one of my mecha, but never
get around to it), and some cooler feet.  But alas, I'm sick of Lego right now -
they're like Krispy Kreme doughnuts after I've had two dozen of them.  So maybe
in the future I'll do moreto it, butmost liekly I'll just skip to the next
project.

Thanks to:

Dave Johann - for cotributing the eye. I challenge anyone out there (besides
Dave Johann, of course, and Bryce Mcglone) to figure out what set it came
from...

Bryce Mcglone - for the wonderful backdrop he loaned to be for this pic:

(more pics with this backdrop to follow)
Special thanks to these two for their limitless hospitality whenever I'm down in
L.A.

Sun Yun - For his input on the importance of scaling mecha properly.

Gla Gla - Hands - It would be worth it to learn Japanese just to talk to you in
person and see your models firsthand...

And all of my other mecha buddies out there - I'm forever stealing your ideas
;-)

Later, Chris

Every once in a while you show off a mecha that raises the bar in terms of posability and general "coolness". What (...) (21 years ago, 21-Jul-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)

(...) Chris, Looks great! I especially love the head design. I think that the head and the hands are the most important part of a mech. It gives Aldebaran alot of personality and character. Also, I am a huge fan of the single eye mech look. It (...) (21 years ago, 26-Jul-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)

Hey Chris! Sorry for the late reply, I've been at camp for a week. Anyways... Geez every aspect of her/it/him is done perfectly! You're older mecha looked sweet, but not as sweet as this. You covered everything that hints at it's posability, and did (...) (21 years ago, 6-Aug-03, to lugnet.build.mecha)
