The first time I looked at this I wasn’t too fond of it. My mind got wrapped around the idea of a sedan, and it really doesn’t work for that, but as a dunebuggy it’s a rather interesting design. The version shown in the last three images looks a lot more interesting, though, with how the front bumper and headlights looks like a little monster face. I’m curious as to why that version isn’t shown transformed (or are those bits, the rear spoiler, and the pin-joiners in the rear wheels just accessories?). I’m not as fond of the robot mode, as the way the large shoulder cannon/missle launchers are mounted causes the overall design to look a bit insectlike. Then again, the whole robot mode looks a bit like a Bohrok on steroids, so maybe that’s entirely appropriate.

As I built I realised the transforming possibilities of these parts, and I’ve been thinking about building a transforming model, what with all the other great ones popping up lately.

I’ve never really explored that idea much myself (beyond a handful of Bohrok variations, which don’t really count), partly because I think the ball-joints might be just a bit too posable for a clean vehicle mode. Even when balling up a Bohrok, the limbs don’t quite like to go where they’re supposed to. The click hinges aren’t nearly as posable, but they allow for a nice crisp transformation, so I guess it really depends on which is more important to you when you start building. Obviously you went with robot posability, but how tight is the car mode?

I was also inspired by Purple Dave to look at my Bionicle bin a bit more closely.

:) One down...

The end result came together relatively quickly for me (one evening’s building) and I’m pretty pleased with it

I’ve found that making the occassional 24-hour MOC goes a long way towards keeping the creative juices primed. They may not always turn out as well as they could have with more time to devote to detail, but it really forces you to quickly think up some new and interesting solutions to any problems that arise, and that’s something that never hurts when it comes to the larger MOCs.

(...) The second version is shown transforming in the video clip. It works essentially the same except for the bumpers and lights which must be folded under. I'll put up some more photos when the pull back motor version is completed. (...) I think (...) (21 years ago, 25-Jun-03, to lugnet.build.mecha, FTX)
