Hello,
My name is Chris Searing.  I have been lurking around LUGNET for a few years
now.  I finally decided to show myself , mostly because the Mechastruct
contest urged me to do so.  I have been building my own mechs (yes, mechs.
NOT mecha, although some of my designs may slightly resemble mecha.)) for
about five years.  Most of my designs have been destroyed due to my limited
supply of good parts, and I have not taken many pictures.  What I do have I
will gladly show here.

So without further ado, I present my first entry, The SRX-032 "Rook"
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=29516
(I still do not have a digital camera, so the pics aren't that great)

The SRX-032 was designed as a medium assault mech.  It was equipped with
various modular weapons attachments that can be mounted to hard points on
the fore-arms and shoulders in order to give it a wide range of attack
options, which can be swithed out in a matter of minutes.  The mech can
easily cover any role from long-range assault to hand-to-hand combat.  It
also has extra plates of armor around critical locations, giving the unit a
rather large and bulky appearance.  The incredibly powerful and nearly
unstoppable appearence of the SRX-032 caused many pilots to nickname it the
"Rook," after the rather powerful chess piece.  But like the pice itself,
the "Rook" is not invincible.  The weak point of this mech is the
back-mounted fusion reactor.  There was no room to fit both it and the
cockpit inside the mech, so the design engineers chose to mount it as a back
unit.  Too many hits to the unit would punch through the armor and caust the
reactor to explode.  Engineers bypassed this problem by making the reactor
ejectable.  This way, even if the reactor is destroyed, the basic mech can
be saved.  It can the be picked up by a recsue unit and be fitted with a new
reactor back at base.
The current weapons available for the SRX-032 are:
   Standard issue medium laser rifle
   Arm-mounted gattling heavy autocannon
   Fore-arm replacement heavy energy shotgun
   Shoulder-mounted twin-barrel mortar launcher
Shoulder-mounted 8-tube missile rack (can use various types of ammo)
More weapons option soon to come.

Build notes:  I have actually had this mech completed since late October,
but it has taken me a while to get pictures taken.  This is currently one of
my favorite designs and I am trying my best not to scrap it for parts.  I
have used some techniques that I have seen here on build.mecha, but I have
also tried to keep it as original as possible.  It has been heavily based on
units from the Heavy Gear series of games, but not completely.  I used the
back mounted reactor, SMS units in the heels, and modular designs from that
series while building it.  I like the way it looks from the front and back,
but it has a very thin side profile, which I do not like as much, but it
works.  There is also not much of a cockpit, and I would have to make the
torso much larger to add one, but it is just something I will have to work
with.  Also, if you look at the picture of the reactor, you will see two
tailights on the rear armor skirt.  That is something I have been
incorporating into my newer mechs, so I guess it could be called one of my
trademarks.

I am going to post about my other two contest entries soon, which are
already up in Brickshelf.  If anyone has anymore questions, feel free to
ask.  More pictures might come later.  I hope everyone likes what I have to
offer.
Chris

I forgot one thing... The "Rook" is for the military 8" and over category. Chris (22 years ago, 23-Dec-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)

(...) Welcome Chris! Always good to see new designs. This one is quite impressive for a first post. I really dig the color scheme, except there seems to be a tad bit too much black. Maybe I only dislike this because black doesn't photograph well. (...) (22 years ago, 23-Dec-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)

Hey Chris, welcome to the mob. I particuarily like your use of the chain links on the heels. Great job! Mark Neumann (22 years ago, 24-Dec-02, to lugnet.build.mecha)
