It's hard to know if the legs are too short from a camera's perspective.
Wide angle shots tend to distort things. I usually assume my mecha legs are
going to be too short and design then to be easily lengthened above or below
the knees when I finally make it stand up and can get a good look at the
proportions.

Well, all of them. I tend to think that the larger a model is, the stronger
it needs to be proportionally. It should be built such that it is difficult
to disassemble. My skeletal structures can't be pulled apart because they
are all cross reinforced technic (you know the old beam-plate-plate-beam
with a vertical beam pinned to link it together, and similar techniques).
Armor is strongly built in layers so it can't come apart into atomic lego
components, then the armor chunks are attached with pins to the skeleton.
I like it when a model convinces my minifigs that it's real.
