Oh, absolutely, couldn't you tell from the ultra-blurry pictures?
The lower end of the torso is actually based on Colin Gutierrez's BA-13
Nodatchi torso. In blurry picture #4 on my site, the "platform" the minifig is
standing on is actually the crew hatch in its open position. Once he
boards the mecha, the hatch flips up and the "backpack" flips down to
cover it.
I gotta get a better digicam, dang it.
